Blogging is still one of the best ways to build an online income in India. You need very little money to start, and a good blog keeps bringing visitors for years. This guide takes you from zero to your first published post, then shows how blogs actually make money.
Step 1: Choose your niche
Your niche is the topic your blog covers. A good niche sits where three things overlap:
- You know or enjoy it, so you can write 50+ posts without burning out.
- People search for it, so there is traffic to win.
- It can make money, through products, services or ads.
Examples that work well in India: personal finance, tech and gadgets, careers and exam prep, cooking, travel, health and fitness, and business tools.
Step 2: Pick a name and domain
Choose a short, brandable name that leaves room to grow. Avoid tying it to one tiny topic. Eligible Hostinger plans include a free domain for the first year; see how to claim it.
Step 3: Get hosting and install WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress is the standard for serious blogs. Hostinger Premium is enough to start, and WordPress installs in one click.
Follow our full setup guide: how to build a WordPress website on Hostinger.
Step 4: Set up the essentials
- A fast, clean theme (Astra, GeneratePress or Kadence)
- An SEO plugin (Rank Math or Yoast)
- Pages: About, Contact, Privacy Policy and Disclaimer
- Google Search Console and Google Analytics
Step 5: Plan content people search for
Successful blogs answer specific questions. Instead of "Fitness tips", write "15-minute home workout for beginners without equipment". To find topics:
- Type your topic into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions and "People also ask" questions.
- Look at what ranks and write something more complete, more current and easier to follow.
- Group posts into clusters: one big guide linked to several smaller related posts.
Step 6: Write posts that rank
- Put the main keyword in the title, first paragraph and URL. This guide on writing meta titles and descriptions has good examples.
- Use clear H2 headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables. A heading structure checker spots skipped or missing headings.
- Add your own screenshots and real experience; generic text rarely ranks.
- Link to 2–3 related posts on your own blog.
- Publish consistently: 2–3 quality posts a week beats 10 rushed ones.
Step 7: Make money from your blog
| Method | How it works | When to start |
|---|---|---|
| Display ads | Google AdSense or ad networks pay per view or click | After steady traffic |
| Affiliate marketing | Earn a commission when readers buy through your links | From your first posts |
| Sponsored posts | Brands pay you to write about them | Once you have an audience |
| Your own products | E-books, courses, templates | When you know what readers need |
| Services | Freelancing or consulting in your niche | Any time |
Plan your first 30 posts
Before writing, list 30 post ideas grouped into three or four topic clusters. For a personal finance blog, the clusters might be budgeting, saving, investing basics and taxes. For each cluster, plan one detailed "pillar" guide and several shorter posts that link to it. This structure helps readers find related content and helps Google understand what your blog is about.
A simple publishing schedule
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| Month 1 | Set up the blog, publish 8–10 strong posts, set up Search Console |
| Months 2–3 | Publish 2–3 posts a week, start linking posts together |
| Months 4–6 | Update early posts, add images and FAQs, grow an email list |
| Months 6–12 | Double down on topics that bring traffic, add affiliate links and ads |
How to promote a new blog
- Answer questions on Quora and Reddit, linking to your post only when it truly helps.
- Share on social media where your audience already is: Instagram, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn or WhatsApp communities.
- Start an email list from day one with a simple free download or checklist.
- Collaborate with other bloggers in your niche through guest posts.
- Update old posts regularly; refreshed content often climbs in search results.
Tools you will need
- Hosting and a domain (Hostinger Premium is enough to start; follow our WordPress setup guide)
- WordPress with a lightweight theme
- An SEO plugin such as Rank Math or Yoast
- Google Search Console and Google Analytics
- A simple image editor and an image compressor
- A spreadsheet to plan topics and track what you publish
How long until you earn?
Be realistic. Most blogs earn little in the first six months while Google gets to know them. Income usually grows after 6–12 months of consistent publishing, and much faster in niches where readers buy products you can recommend. Treat the first year as an investment in content that keeps working for years.
Writing tips that help posts rank
- Answer the main question in the first few lines, then go into detail.
- Use your own experience: photos, screenshots, prices you paid and results you saw.
- Compare options in a table when readers are choosing between products.
- Add an FAQ section with the questions people actually ask.
- Update posts every few months so information stays current.
Legal basics for bloggers
- Disclose affiliate links clearly near the link and on a disclosure page.
- Publish a privacy policy, especially if you use analytics, ads or collect emails.
- Use images you have rights to: your own photos or free-licence libraries.
- Do not copy content from other sites; rewrite in your own words and add your experience.
- Declare blog income when filing your taxes.
Common beginner mistakes
- Choosing a niche only for money, then quitting after ten posts
- Spending weeks on design instead of writing
- Copying content or publishing unedited AI text
- Giving up before month six
